Croatia and SSC
“Like a string of Green Pearls...”

The unique natural beauty of the Dalmatian Archipelago is the result of the Mediterranean filling with water all those centuries ago and leaving the tops of many coastal mountains above water – creating for us one of the most cruising friendly areas to sail inside . There are literally hundreds of islands , close to the mainland stretching from Istria in the north for 250 miles to Dubrovnik and the border with Montenegro to the south , with so many places to moor and anchor the choice for the yachtsman is endless...!

Many of the larger islands are inhabited to this day and remain undeveloped so that when you enter a harbour the charm and old world style , combined with essential facilities ashore , provide a special atmosphere and insight into the sea borne way of life that the Adriatic was built on . Fishing , olive oil and winemaking as well as boat building still live on in some places .

The Croatians have recognised for many years the value of their environment and some wildernesses have been outlined and dedicated to National Parks , where wildlife and coastline are strictly protected but are open and available to the sailors who find moorings especially laid out for them to enjoy. This allows us more remote places sometimes to overnight away from bustling harbour towns .

More frequently we anchor for lunch and swimming in some unspoilt bay along our route to the nights stop , and there are many of these too!

Non – Stop Sun ...!

Well we know really why you want to come , and so its safe to say that for example The Island of Hvar is reknowned for having the sunniest climate in the Adriatic ! Our itinerary usually takes us to this special stop and as we are away from the mountain steep mainland most of the week we stay cloud free . Most of the season from April to October is pleasantly warm and although June and July can be hot it rarely gets past the mid 30’s Celsius that our more southern neighbours suffer from in mid summer . The regular daily routine of sea and land breezes allow good sailing and help to keep us cool on board . The sea is warm enough for a swim from about May to late October , and the waters clean enough in most harbours to dive in on arrival or first thing in the morning !

Wireless Broadband ...!

If you have never been to this area it will surprise how up to date the Croatians are and very forward looking , embracing all modern developments , whilst being able to maintain their own culture and way of life . It is now possible to sit out at a cafe on a island and check your emails whilst waiting for the freshly caught fish to grill in the restaurant next door... More recent infrastructure projects pre European accession means that many holidaymakers can drive on fast highways from the front door to Split and soon to Dubrovnik as well . Fast Ferries now operate in the season and so travel is easy to any destination . Its not such a bad idea to combine a sailing course with us and a few days or week exploring the rest of this interesting country , and many of our customers do so already . We have contacts that can help you with this , so do ask anytime . For the more active time off the water can be spent hiking , diving , kayaking , rock climbing , horse riding , jeep safaris , wine tasting tours etc .

Eat , Drink and be...Friendly!

The Coastal Dalmatians have been serving tourists from many countries for a very long time , and their expertise shows in a wide menu to please all comers . Most appealing for our kind of cruising is trying out the local fresh seafood served in many delicious ways in different ports daily ..what a job but someone’s got to do it ! Oh and by the way they really enjoy making Wine , lots of it , everywhere – and the owner of the Konoba will proudly offer you his own label . They keep a high standard of friendly service too and can manage several languages .

Beginning to sound like somewhere you should go ? We think so ! Come and sail with us and maybe stay a while longer and find out for yourself why Croatia earns its place in many top travel lists.

Now that you know a little more about Croatia why don't you find out what a Typical day is like with SSC.
